Happy rainy day, friends! I have something to keep you warm in the event that this rain does, in fact, turn into snow this afternoon like the meteorologists are predicting. Landon is the master mixologist of the house, and he came up with his own twist on a classic Old Fashioned using grapefruit. It’s the perfect thing to sip on while watching the snow fall!
Many Old Fashioned recipes these days use simple syrup instead of the classic sugar cubes. Not only are the sugar cubes adorable, but it’s also much more convenient to grab a couple of sugar cubes from a box than to whip up a batch of simple syrup. Don’t get me wrong, there is a definite time and place for simple syrup (hello mojitos!), but the sugar cubes were the clear winner here (plus also, you can soak up some grapefruit juice with a sugar cube and then pop the cube into your mouth for a sweet treat…I might have done this a few times during recipe development). We also incorporated some grapefruit bitters into our recipe. Our Christmas present this year from Landon’s brother and his girlfriend was a box of all kinds of wonderful spices, sauces, and bitters, including the grapefruit variety used here (find under the ‘Food and Drink’ category here). I was SO excited when I opened that box Christmas morning and can’t wait to feature more of those products in fun recipes on the blog. If you don’t have or can’t find grapefruit bitters, no big deal! Just use Angostura bitters (the most commonly used type) instead.
The next order of business when making this drink is deciding what type of bourbon will be used. We played around with a few different varieties, but in the end, Angel’s Envy, a fairly new addition to our bourbon collection, turned out to be the clear winner. Angel’s Envy’s palate is described as “vanilla, ripe fruit, maple syrup, toast and bitter chocolate.” It paired extremely well with the grapefruit juice and we highly recommend it for this recipe.
Stay warm and travel safe, everyone! Hopefully spring will drop in and stay for a while soon!
- 2 sugar cubes
- 4 dashes bitters (we used grapefruit bitters)
- 3 bar spoons water
- 1 bar spoon cherry juice (from a jar of maraschino cherries)
- 1 slice grapefruit
- 4 shots of good quality bourbon (we used Angel’s Envy)
- 1 large ice cube
- 2 maraschino cherries
- Place sugar cubes in the bottom of an old fashioned glass. Saturate sugar cubes with bitters; add water and cherry juice. Muddle together. Stir until sugar is dissolved. Add bourbon. Squeeze grapefruit slice into glass (do not discard the slice after squeezing). Stir to combine. Add large ice cube and top with grapefruit slice and maraschino cherries.
